Applications are now open for Printed Matter’s 2019 LA Art Book Fair (LAABF), April 12–April 14, 2019 (Preview April 11), at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles, California.
Applications will be open until 11:59pm on December 11, 2018.
Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair (LAABF), initiated in 2013, is the companion fair to the NY Art Book Fair. The two fairs are the leading international gatherings for the distribution of artists’ books, celebrating the full breadth of the art publishing community.
Printed Matter’s Art Book Fairs are art book publishing focused. When filling out the exhibitor application, please be specific and illustrate how the proposed booth or project space will feature artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, zines, or related printed material. Applicants are required to submit images of recent publication projects and/or presentations. Exhibitors should not foreground editions, prints, apparel, or original artwork.
Each year, Printed Matter receives nearly 1,000 applications for its LA Art Book Fair. Due to this high volume of submissions, exhibitors will be notified on a rolling basis regarding the status of their application. Submission of an application does not guarantee participation. Pricing for participation is tiered. Placement preference will be noted, but due to space limitations, exhibitors may be offered placement that differs from their stated preference.
Held at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles over three days (plus Preview evening), LAABF 2019 will welcome hundreds of exhibitors from around the world, including a broad range of artists and collectives, small presses, institutions, galleries, antiquarian booksellers, and distributors. With a commitment to diversity and representation, the event will serve as a meeting place for an extended community of publishers and book enthusiasts, as well as a site for dialog and exchange around all facets of arts publishing.
We look forward to reviewing your application!
Shannon Michael Cane Award The Shannon Michael Cane Award will be granted to emerging artists (artists, artists’ book publishers, or collectives in the early stages of their career) who would be first-time exhibitors in a Printed Matter Art Book Fair. Four recipients will each be granted a table and a modest stipend that may be applied towards travel, publication production costs, or other Fair-related expenses. Shannon Michael Cane (1974-2017) was a pillar of the Printed Matter family and artists’ book community, serving as Curator of Fairs and Editions from 2013-2017. Shannon was a champion of emerging book artists and publishers, often providing new voices with their first opportunity to share their work broadly through the NY and LA Art Book Fairs. This scholarship is provided through the Shannon Michael Cane Memorial Fund at Printed Matter, a fund initiated by his closest friends and collaborators, which supports projects carried out in his spirit and memory.
TO APPLY: E-mail your application confirmation along with a one-page cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org explaining how this scholarship would make your first time at a Printed Matter Art Book Fair possible. Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprised of Printed Matter staff and the founders of the Shannon Michael Cane Memorial Fund.
